It's quite a long time I don't "use" this blog anymore. "Use"? Update? Whatever you prefer, the point is that I'm not writing here.
My facebook "page" is regularly updated and lately even more considering that I bought a smart phone.
As you may (or may not) know I recently moved to the US, Chicago. I work for the same company, just now for the US Firm; my job is IT Audit & Consulting.
You can probably imagine how many things I had to do in the last few months, first before coming here (and leaving my company in Italy right at the end of the peak season) and then once here. Things like finding an apartment (I live in downtown Chicago now!), get a SSN (I will not tell you!), open a bank account (no credentials either), assemble an awful lot of IKEA furniture (you damn swedish), watching Bulls games (Go Bulls Go... let's kick Lebron's ass once per all!), become a member of the local Ducati Owner's Club (in the hilly Illinois), buy a 2009 Ducati Monster 1100S (sweeeet), buying the first track day for Memorial Day (here, at Autobahn Joliet) and so on.
My first verdict so far is...
- Making "foho" (which in my jargon means have a nice, fast motorbike ride on nice, fast, twisty roads) with the bike here is a hassle: even if Illinois can sorta sounds like "hilly", it's definitely not. And you still have to drive 500 miles a day. You can go to Wisconsin but nothing like the bike's heaven that Italy is. So far, my biggest concern. (seriously)
- cold, too damn cold and horrible weather. here the locals are telling me that what we are experienced so far is not normal, that soon the weather will get warmer and super-nice but still. it sucks.
- I think it's quite the normal and first thing experienced by expats, but, being raised in Florence for the last 30 years, made me accustomed to one thing, probably the most important: friends. Friends that I know since I was a kid, friends who I shared almost my entire life with. This is definitely something that hit me more than expected. I'm putting this not on top of the list since, well, it had to be this way I guess, regardless of the location I would have moved to (read: California).
The Americans? Well, besides the fact that my girlfriend is american (and probably reads this blog), I would say: nice and friendly people. The people I knew at the Ducati Club for example have been really nice: they helped me a lot and, honestly, I felt quite embarrassed ... I have to buy some wine for them! :)
Anyway, it's still too early... let's wait for the next update. Hopefully it will be sooner than a few months! :)

They're already counterattacking on court (see here) but at the same time they found a smart way to pay the fine, if it will be necessary. I know: you keep saving links into del.icio.us (I can't stand the new URL), tagging them as 'DIY', 'Weekend Projects'. And then, when you find the right time to do it, you begin reading the instuctions:

... and you give up. You don't have such things.
Don't worry. In 15 minutes you'll build _yourself_ a stand for your shiny iPod Touch.
Ta daaaa!
Here below the worst, ugliest, feature-less, time-consuming stand
you'll ever see. But it's yours. And it was built by yourself.
The stand will let your iPod work with USB cable and/or earphones (at least with the cable provided by Bose).
The only tools you'll need are:
- the original packaging your iPod came with (yes, the plastic box)
- adhesive tape
- (rock)
- paper
- scissors
- knife
- the 2 Apple stickers kindly included in the packaging
In the next days I'll provide PDF to print out and cut the needed tape strips. :)

The editors at Repubblica launched a great campaign, "Il mio desktop", asking the readers to send pictures of their desktop. Even if the idea isn't original (take a look at the "featured desktop" section on Lifehacker), it's still useful and interesting to "read" through.
They collected more than 4000 pictures and they created 165 (one-hundred-sixtyfive) galleries; every gallery contains 25 pictures.
Wait? What??? Am I supposed to click 4125 times (165*25) to watch the pictures?
Are you serious?? Come on: ever heard of a "slideshow"??

Yesterday I saw "Marley & Me". It almost made me cry... I thought it was just a classic comedy with Jennifer Aniston, Owen Wilson and some dogs hanging around. I couldn't be more wrong.
For me it's quite uncommon to be really touched by a movie, let alone to cry because of a movie. I have seen a lot of movies lately (even "sad" titles, like Gran Torino, Changeling, Frozen River, Revolutionary Road and so on...) but none touched me as much as "Marley & Me". I don't know if it sounds weird to you but it's true. Definitely.
I think there are 2 likely (and interesting) audiences for the movie: people who have/had a pet and people who don't but who are interested in pet. The first would see themselves in the main characters in the movie and the latter... well, I don't know. They could either decide to get a pet :) or to have more respect for all the people who love animals.
After the jump some thoughts about the movie, about me, about Tex and maybe some spoilers: I don't think the plot in this movie is that important. The point is how it has been told, but be advised: I'm going to highlight the spoilers.

Today I bought a scalped seat in a court of justice for the first time
in my life. The Pirate Bay courtroom was full. But locally famous
Swedish author Sigge Eklund whispered in my ear that he had an offer
for three seats after the intermission. The price would be about $60
each. We met in a corner of the hallway and finalized the transaction
with three young men who were leaving. I was in! This pretty much
captures the rock-star quality of The Pirate Bay trial.

I'm just curious... what happened to you on January 21.?
I have seen the analytics report on my blog and I have found a great rise of visitors on this date.
Somehow it seems a lot of people (with regard of my normal flow of visitors, of course) found interesting this page about LSD, Alcohol and Trees. It sounds quite strange that the visitors arrived here directly and not from an external link or search engine.
Mmmh... mysteries of the web statistics.
Speaking of that: since I don't use any statistics tool for the RSS feed, I'm curious to know how many of you are following the useless things I write here via RSS feed. Do you mind leave a comment to let me know?

Britannica is going to allow viewers to edit articles, with changes to be editorial reviewed within 20 minutes.
Mmmmh, if I'm not wrong in 2006 Tom Panelas, Encyclopedia Britannica's Director of Corporate Communications, said:
Wikipedia allows anyone to write and edit articles, regardless of their
knowledge of the subjects on which they're writing, their ability to
write, or their commitment to truth. This policy has allowed Wikipedia
to grow large very fast, but it's come at a price.
The price is that many of its articles are inaccurate, poorly
written, long and bloated, or laden with bias and spin. Despite what
some people would like to believe about Wikipedia, that its system is
self-correcting, many inaccuracies remain for long periods of time, new
ones are added, and, judging from quite a few media reports, sound
information posted by people knowledgeable on a subject is often undone
by others who know nothing about it. This is a natural result of the
way Wikipedia is put together, its willingness to let anyone write and
edit and unwillingness to give precedence to people who know what
they're talking about. People who use Wikipedia should be aware of

In italian if someone "e' una pippa" means that he "is an handjob", meaning that he's "poor", not good at doing somewhat. Well, this word "pippa" in italian isn't in any way polite (kinda rude, actually), but ...
In the Corriere della Sera (one of the most important newspaper in Italy) of yesterday (page 51), there is an article in the Sport section about Shaquille O' Neal, everything but a poor basketball player. Any way he reached the ugly record of 5.000 missed free throws (english link on ESPN).
Do you wanna know the word the journalist (Riccardo Romani, author for the Corriere della Sera) used? "handjob"... "pippa", actually.
Last time they didn't know the meaning of an english word (maybe).. but now? Unbelievable.

Remember last time I talked about organizing your (huge) mp3 collection ?
My first concern was not to get powned when installing a new system or media application. I was thinking about all "those fancy rating and stars" you put using iTunes or similar software and you'll likely to lose if you change application (for example, the brand new Songbird 1.0).
I chose the "phisical way": along with correct and coherent mp3 tagging, I moved (actually, copied) all my favorited songs in a new directory. So, now I have my "music" dir along with a "music_favorites" dir. I also tagged every favorited track with "Favorites" in the field "Composer": doing that way I didnt lose anything important to me (that field is not relevant for my collection) and I can still use the fancy features of media manager applications. I also noted (later) the iPod let you browse your music using the "Composer" tag field.
I'm done with this task: after listening to my whole mp3 collection, I picked up the best tracks, tagged and copied in that "music_favorites" folder.
Amarok now tells me the "music" directory contains 6110 tracks (2 weeks and 5 days) and the "music_favorites" 1981 tracks (6 days 7 hours).
32,42%. cool.

I totally believe it would be way better if our Max Mosley would return to his whip and his nazi whore guards, rather than suggesting these insane F1 rules:
1. "Mosley wants standard engine for F1" : For god's sake ... one vendor! I'd rather suggest also to have just one driver and let see if the different colors used in the racing suits change the laptimes.
2. "Mosley: 10 years engine freeze beneficial for all": Max, go hang yourself with a whip on a tree if you really want to do some good to the environment!

In the few days I spent in New York, I saw a lot of people with iPhones (3G or GSM doesnt matter). I didn't expect anything less since Apple is selling tons and tons of phones worldwide.
What I found really weird is that, because of the iPhones, many people are (again) taking care of their cellphones.
We remember those crazy devices to keep your ZackMorrisPhone safe but it is sounds so...90s. :)
And now, again, many are using hard or software covers, leather bags, screen protectors and so on.
But the weirdest thing I saw were the many people that walk (or run) keeping the iphone in hand.
Oh Gosh, can't you just use your ipod shuffle and your 40$ cellphone when jogging?? come on...

As stated before, I visited New York with some friends (Matteo, Stefano and Vieri).
I didnt blog during those days because I had no laptop with me thanks our beloved DHS
and, actually, it had be almost impossible since we had no free time at
all. Just as a straight regular tourist, we were out from the morning
to evening and, after an hour of rest at home, again out for dinner and
drinking/dancing. :)
I found New York amazing. Totally. A huge city (even if Tokyo is way bigger, I think), with a lot of things to do, visit, enjoy. And, I should be honest here, New York has style.
I'm the last person who can suggest anything about New York, so I'm
just going to tell some things we did and just a couple of places that,
maybe, are not so famous.

UPDATE: Unfortunately the worst economic meltdown since 1929 definitely played against me and against my project of moving to the US, with the support of my actual employer. In the last years it has been really difficult to be accepted for the international program, let alone for someone who's not a native english-language speaker. I'm strill trying but things are getting more and more unlikely.
Maybe you're wondering why my english sucks or - more likely - why I write most of my blog in english even if it sucks.
Answer to the 1st question is that I've never studied english at school. Never Ever: I have been always in german classes (and this is why I attended the Erasmus Project in Munich, Germany).
So, I'm learning english on my own with computers, internet, movie, TV Series and books.
"Even if you're a self-made man, your english still sucks".
That's right and here comes the answer of the 2nd question.
I decided some months ago to train myself writing the blog in english, except some "italian-only" posts.
If you feel yourself a teacher, please correct me when I write something wrong; in any case, I hope you can get what I mean.
BTW: since I asked my company to move to the US next year (Sept 2009), I'm running out of time and that's why I also hired an english teacher for private lessons. :)

Today, 8 o' clock in the morning.
I get out my building, all shiny in business suit, tie, shirt and everything.
I'm almost getting into my car when a nice girl in blonde hair nearby looks at me. I look at her. She stares at me and I do the same.
Everything lasts so long, 2 or 3 seconds. I'm going to say something when, all of a sudden, she, touching her hair, says: "your hair... here on the left: it's kinda messy".
Gosh.
The words I was going to say die in my mouth... I can barely say "thank you", smiling.
She understands the disappointment and she gives me a huge smile.
At least she didn't say "It's that....it's... hair gel?"

I forgot to tell you I'm in Lisbon.
Monday and Tuesday I'm going to attend a training here (the topic is "Anti Fraud Audit") and, since flight and hotel are already paid by my company, why I shouldn't take a couple of days off? I arrived yesterday. :)

Here highlighted the bandwidth usage after a 2 hour usage of ONLY gmail and google reader: 32mb downloaded and 6,5mb in upload.
I was using a 56kbps connection, so I avoided to load heavy feeds like gizmodo or bigpicture, due the usage of pictures in the posts.
Just to answer to the dumb-asses at vodafone italy whose some weeks ago explained us that an insane expansive data plan [1] for the new iphone 3G, providing 600mb per month, is more than appropriate. [2]

In summer, when I'm not home and I'm not traveling (like this year), I read a lot. Really. Just take a look somewhere on the right column of the blog and you'll find my readings in these days. I'm addicted: I go in a bookshop and I begin turning my head around, looking for something that could be interesting, and I finish buying 5/6 books at once. Last month, preparing for the huge spare time I'd have in August, I bought a lot of books but it turned out they are too few. I'm running out of books. :)
Btw, since I don't want to read books all day long, I buy also newspapers and magazines; yesterday I was in a shop and saw two different issues of XL; while thinking "yeah, it's a long time I don't read that magazine, let me take a look", I picked one copy (the one with some comic on the cover) and came back home.
God, it really sucks. A lot of garbage, adv and... horrible comics. The damn magazine is full of non-sense, poor-designed (most of them) comics.
How can you even sell that shit??

Dato che il buon dio ha deciso di far piovere per tutta l'estate durante il fine settimana, oggi, mentre ero in ufficio, ho pensato: "fa un caldo bestia, il sole sparisce verso le nove di sera... ma un po' di foho oggi pomeriggio???"

Yesterday I watched "The Bucket List" ("Non è mai troppo tardi" in italian): it's the story of 2 elderly men (Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman) with cancer and just six months of life remaining. They decide to take a world trip and do all the things they never did in their whole life.
Good movie and it's definitely worth 90 minutes of your spare time and even a ticket at the cinema! :)

Nothing special, actually. Well, it will make you laugh but I definitely prefer the first episodes of this american saga... This one, in my opinion, is the grossest. The worst thing is that we miss Stiffmaster played by Seann William Scott... you know what I mean. :)
American Gangster
I enjoyed a lot this movie. Really. The beginning isn't so fast, but then how the characters are designed and how the story develops itself will glue you on the couch. Great Denzel Washington (as usual, I've to say), a good Russel Crowe but, actually, the best of the movie are the story and the Denzel Washington's character. It's based on a true story and somehow is similar to another movie I liked, based on a true story about a drug dealer and his business: Blow with Johnny Depp.

Beh, in realtà eravamo sull'1 a 2... Mi riferisco alla vicenda di Apple che denuncia i bloggers per alcune indiscrezioni sui propri prodotti lanciati sul web anzitempo: l'inizio della partita, l'1 a 0 per Apple e, infine, il raddoppio di inet che porta il risultato sull' 1 a 2.
Ora purtroppo tocca ad Apple ribaltare il risultato: dopo le minacce legali, ThinkSecret ha chiuso.

As an IT Auditor, I work for several companies, clients of my company. In our office in Florence we have not so many huge clients to work for: in fact, the biggest clients are just two.
The first is an industrial factory, really huge: thousands of employees, tens of test to perform, 11-hours-long shift (for us, of course) and so on.
The second is a telco with not too many employees but that keeps us really busy because of the test we have to perform.
Our activity, as Auditor, has to be finished within march-april and our teams will work in the same timeframe (january-march) for both the clients.
Since the timing, normally it's not possible that the same person could work in both the projects...
Well, 3 days ago I heard from my boss that "yes, in winter you will work for both the engagements: you will stay 3 days in a company and 2 days in the other one. On the field you'll have 2 persons working there for 5 days a week. For five/six weeks. Stop."
No way to avoid that, no way to complain... just do it.

mi chiamo Gabriele cognome e mi occupo di progettazione di corsi di formazione professionale per il comune di città italiana.
Da qualche mese mi sto interessando al software libero in vista di un'eventuale progettazione di corsi sul tema, rivolti a lavoratori di aziende private e pubbliche.

Alla fine ce l'ho fatta.
Il 29 Luglio parto per San Francisco dove vivrò per tre settimane, frequentando un corso di lingua e vivendo in un albergo spocchia (se fa cagare, giuro che per quanto l'ho pagato tiro dei moccoli che li sentite dall'Italia).
L'ultima settimana di vacanza (19 agosto-26 agosto) la vorrei invece passare in giro per la California, possibilmente in moto. Rientro in Italia il 27 Agosto alle 13.55 per lasciarla :) due ore dopo, partendo subito per la Sicilia. Domenica 2 settembre sarò invece ancora Firenze per cominciare a lavorare il giorno dopo.

Di recente ho visto due film che mi sono piaciuti molto e che vi consiglio: non sono recentissimi, magari qualcuno di voi l'ha già visti.

Jim Carrey, a mio avviso, si conferma ancora una volta un grande attore. Number 23 è un film che narra il crollo fisico e psicologico di un uomo (Carrey) e, in questo, mi ha ricordato la prestazione di Leonardo di Caprio in "The Aviator" che, però, a differenza di questo, non mi piacque granchè. Jim Carrey magistrale!

Altro bel film: descritto ieri sera da me come "un 'favoloso mondo di Amelie' più cupo e angosciante, ambientato nella Spagna franchista, con qualche scena un po' truce. Da vedere.".

Decise le vacanze per quest'estate: 15 giorni a Londra.
Parto martedi' 15 agosto e torno il 30; ho trovato da dormire alla
Dinwiddy House: 40 euro a notte per una singola con bagno. La zona e' King's Cross, vicino alla British Library. Il volo l'ho comprato lunedi' pomeriggio su expedia.it e martedi' mattina alle 08.10 e' arrivato TNT con i biglietti della Meridiana.
Mi sa che non faro' come per il e non faro' quindi un blog dedicato: mi accontentero' di una categoria su quello principale o al massimo di un tag.

E' da un sacco di tempo che volevo parlare di questo nuovo servizio basato su
google maps: si chiama
Pin The Map.
Sostanzialmente vi permette di piazzare delle bandierine sulle mappe prese da google maps e aggiungere un piccolo commento.
Appena confermato il commento, il server fornisce il link per accedere rapidamente alla bandierina stessa, per condividerla con altre persone. E' possibile anche inserire una password per poterla poi modificare in un secondo momento: niente di obbligatorio comunque. Male che vada ne aggiungete un'altra !

Ieri, finalmente, prima uscita seria dell'anno con la
piccolina.
Abbiamo avuto un po' di freddo ma abbiamo fatto una bella fiammata tra il Nuerburgring toscano (la clamorosa strada tra S.Gimignano e Volterra), la Volterrana, la nave scuola Poggibonsi-Castellina in Chianti, la Chiantigiana con le sparate a "Strada in Chianti"... il tutto per un totale di 238km.
Quel minch*one con l'R6 (ad occhio, anche lui un fermone) sta ancora a piagne' per il fiato sul collo per 20km e il pelo che gli ho fatto a Strada in Chianti... mentre (temo) che i
pizzardoni di Panzano stiano ancora ridendo per la foto ricordo che ci hanno fatto... vabbe', vedremo.
Comunque... FOHO!

non ve l'avevo detto ma questi ultimi giorni sono decisivi per il mio (prossimo) futuro.
Come sapete, dal 1 febbraio lavoro per una $multinazionale come revisore contabile.
e sempre come sapete, il lavoro non mi piace: ne avevo la netta impressione prima di cominciare e ora ne ho la certezza.
il contratto e' di apprendistato, di due anni (con i primi 60gg di prova, ti scarevantano fuori - e te ne vai - senza preavviso); la retribuzione e' di 1080 euro piu' straordinari e rimborsi (generosi) vari.
bene.
oggi la $aziendaICT di Roma mi ha offerto uno stage di 6 mesi come "business consultant": lunedi' devo rispondere. la retribuzione e' di 1000 euro lordi. e dopo? chissa'. non promettono niente. non dicono niente.
dire che sono indeciso sarebbe falso... dire che ci sto comunque riflettendo e' vero.
che fare?

il progetto del giorno (non cito le fonti perche' non ho i link sotto mano e sono troppi: fate una
ricerca del genere su google e troverete!) e'
FON : l'obiettivo puo' essere riassunto principalmente con: "paga adsl a casa, permetti agli altri di collegarsi tramite wifi e di scroccarti il collegamento, tu potrai fare lo stesso con gli altri a giro per il mondo".
Ci sono alcune finezze caratteristiche di questo progetto, come ad esempio la possibilita' (non per il momento pero') di essere pagato per i collegamenti che vengono fatti col proprio collegamento: diciamo che chi abita nel centro storico di una bella citta' puo' farsi un bel gruzzoletto!
La mente dietro FON si e' beccato in questi giorni un montagna di milioni di euro da google e skype.
Quest'ultimi, anche se interessanti, sono ininfluenti per il tema di questo post; il punto e' che, a mio avviso, tutto cio' non sara' possibile in Italia dal punto di vista del diritto e che non ne abbiamo cosi' bisogno.

Preciso che non è una citazione testuale, ma se non ricordo male il senso era proprio questo.
Da quanto ricordo (è comunque facilmente verificabile... io l'ho letto in un bar a pranzo) e ho capito, sembra che FON prometta una parte di guadagni alle tlc, presumibilmente per la connessione che gli utenti FON/"utenti delle tlc" fanno scroccare agli altri.
vedremo chi la vincerà... quelle considerazioni di questo post, che esulano dalla probabilità degli accordi con le compagnie, imho rimangono le medesime.

Domani e' il mio primo giorno di lavoro (da dipendente).
Non e' il primo lavoro: ho cominciato come insegnante di informatica in una scuola qui a Firenze e poi ho aperto uno studio di design e comunicazione, insieme ad altri amici,
extraneo.
Ho deciso di percorrere una strada che (forse) sara' piu' "mia": l'azienda e' la $multinazionale e l'area e' la revisione contabile. Prima offerta "seria" che ho ricevuta, potenzialmente ricca in quanto ad esperienza, "farsi le ossa", farsi conoscere, fare curriculum.
Non e' l'area che mi interessa di piu' (quella e' la consulenza, specificatamente ICT), ma e' sicuramente un'area da conoscere, qualunque sia il futuro settore di lavoro.
Il ritmo che mi hanno promesso (e che mi hanno anticipato degli amici dentro in azienda) e' abbastanza mostruoso... proprio ora che mi stavo sbattendo per configurare
mythtv!! :D
e ... si', devo stare in giacca e cravatta. :/

gia'... questo eà' cio' che dovrei dire a qualcuno di tiscali, dopo le mille vicessitudini che abbiamo patito per il nostro
studio.
le peripezie ed i disservizi di un servizio adsl business fornito da
Tiscali li potete desumere dal file di testo allegato; questa era
appunto la lettera da spedire che avevo preparato per comunicare a
tiscali cosa avremmo fatto.
ho preparato la lettera la sera del giorno in cui avevo chiamato il
servizio clienti tiscali (dopo la solita attesa di 30/40 minuti),
minacciando di fare quanto leggerete nel testo allegato.
magicamente, il giorno dopo, telecom (si' si', avete letto bene,
telecom e non tiscali... e' infatti telecom a risolvere i problemi
tecnici) ci chiama e ci dice che adsl funziona.
tiscali: ve la siete veramente cavata per un pelo...
cio' nonostante allego il file suddetto per far capire a tutti che razza di azienda siete.

magari e' una cazzata, pero' e' divertente...
come saprete, Apple ha rilasciato qualche giorno fa l'Ipod Video:
fatevi un giro sul sito ufficiale per conoscerne le specifiche. Tra le
tante, comunque, c'e' la batteria epica, le dimensioni sempre piu'
piccole, lo schermo sempre piu' grande e, ovviamente, la riproduzione
di filmati a 30 fps.
Bene. Oggi rileggevo alcune news che avevo segnato "da approfondire" e
mi sono ritrovato il post nel blog degli sviluppatori del progetto
IpodLinux
, il cui scopo (gia' raggiunto per molti modelli) e' quello di
installare ed usare Linux sugli ipod, anche e soprattutto per fare cose
non previste e permesse dal costruttore. Beh, guardate
questo post e controllatene la data: avevano gia' rilasciato il
loro ipod video! :D
PS non ho provato ancora ad usare questo codice, quindi non so quali
siano le funzionalita' e come siano state implementate, pero' e'
troooooppo interessante!

questo), praticamente inutilizzabile senza T3, in sottoset:

la gara di motogp a motegi (grande loris! in bocca al lupo per l'incidente di ieri...).
il lavoro e' stato
immane : il "search" di flickr fa ancora pena
e su una grossa mole di dati e' troppo fallace; l'ho dovuto fare quindi
manualmente, una per una. senza gli shortcut ed i tabs di firefox.
sarei
morto.
Ora sono anche ordinate per data (non di upload, ma di scatto).
Il blog del viaggio in , invece, e' sempre li'...

mi sono accorto ultimamente che a
flickr non conoscono troppo bene il concetto di "random"...
qualche tempo fa, mi stavo guardando il mio blog sul e ho notato come il
flickr badge
(quell'oggettino che trovate nella colonna di destra su entrambi i blog
e che mostra le foto) andasse a pescare le foto solo tra le ultime
presenti nello stream.
L'oggettino in questione puo' essere scritto in html o flash e puo' essere "configurato" per mostrare delle foto
casuali tra tutto lo stream selezionato (quello globale o un set specifico, come nel caso del Giappone)... beh, in realta' non e'
proprio cosi'.
Fate questa prova: andate a configurarvi il vostro badge (se siete registrati) e notate nella
prima pagina della configurazione le foto mostrate. Confrontate quelle mostrate dal badge in html e in flash: notate qualcosa?
semplice, nel mio caso, che ho un bel po' di foto nello stream, il
badge in flash va a pescare solo tra le ultime e ne mostra alcune,
casualmente.
Quello in html, invece, pesca casualmente da
tutto lo stream..
Il risultato lo vedete qui a destra: ci sono foto dell'
erasmus, della
laurea, di
Dresda o del
giappone.

e' un po' che non scrivo sul blog... tante cose da scrivere.
siamo tornati dal ed e' stato splendido e veramente
l'unico rammarico e' quello di non poter tornarci a breve o
frequentemente... e' troppo lontano.
ho fatto qualche colloquio di lavoro in questi giorni... sempre molto
nervoso prima di entrare, sempre molto rilassato quando sono la'...
classico.
per alcuni di questi aspetto ancora risposta, per uno molto
probabilmente non ho piu' niente da aspettare. vedremo. martedi' ne ho
un altro.
mi sto trovando veramente bene col Thinkpad x40 che ho comprato in
giappone e avere wireless e' veramente mitico; non pensavo, immaginavo,
e' cosi'.
All'IBM non sono troppo diversi dagli altri, mettendo un check via BIOS
sulla scheda wireless da montare. se non e' una di quelle loro (che
costano il triplo a parita' di costruttore e chipset), il portatile
nonn parte. Ho risolto hackando il BIOS e togliendo il controllo. uno
di questi giorni ne parlero'...
All'IBM non sono troppo diversi da
Apple.
Alla Microsoft invece continuano a fare
figure di merda e certo ESR non e' proprio un signore.

oggi ho il primo colloquio di lavoro; un'azienda che offre servizi a grandi alberghi ed al settore dell'alta moda.
e' il primo colloquio vero della mia vita.
devo tirare fuori giacca e cravatta.
personalmente, aspetto ancora qualcuno (mi hanno contattato altre tre
aziende in questi giorni) che mi chiami per il mio curriculum o tesi di
laurea o altro, piuttosto che in quanto "laureato in economia" e basta.

ho aggiunto a il supporto ai

estensione di TheMarco (odioso, ma indubbiamente bravo).
d'ora in poi (sto anche tornando indietro, modificando i vecchi post)
ogni post avra' una serie di tag: cliccando su uno di questi si puo'
vedere una pagina che mostra tutti gli altri post che presentano lo
stesso tag. nella stessa pagina ci sono anche un sacco di informazioni aggiuntive prese da altri siti (taggerati, flickr, ecc).
molto carino anche il "tag cosmos" (raggiungibile da
qui
e nel menu a sinistra) che mostra tutti i tag usati, con la dimensione
che rappresenta la frequenza con la quale sono stati usati. molto
giuocoso!
la prossima che devo fare e' modificare il css per distinguere un po' la lista dei tag...

Sono tornato a Firenze, dove, stranamente, non mi ha accolto il caldo
atroce che temevo di trovare. nei prossimi giorni il maledetto clima
fiorentino avra' modo di smentirmi...
comunque, sono tornato dopo alcune vicissitudine canine: andando in
giro per le fattorie limitrofe (alla casa di campagna) mi sono beccato
_forse_ una zecca, che mi sono tolto circa 15 minuti dopo: il dottore,
pur non avendo trovato nessuna puntura, mi ha "consigliato" (come
consigliano i dottori...) la profilassi standard. 10 gg di pillole, una
settimana di pausa e altri 7gg di pillole: questo vuol dire che la
seconda tranche me la faro' in .
inoltre, mercoledi', sono stato "morso" dal cucciolo di mia cugina
Paola: voleva giocare ma non si e' ricordato che i cucciolini hanno i
denti molto appuntiti. il "piccolo" e' un incrocio tra un alano e un
pastore corso, ha 10 mesi, pesa 78kg e si chiama Enea (nome da leggere
_rigorosamente_ col tono della voce narrante di Fantozzi): mi ha
procurato un simpatico taglio (profondo) ad S sul polpastrello. per ora
non vuole saperne di cicatrizzarsi...
dimenticavo: le foto (della casa di campagna, della fattoria vicina e della bellissima Modica in notturna) sono come sempre su
flickr.

sono qui in sicilia saudita, in campagna, nella
casa di famiglia (mio padre e' siculo).
non mi piace il mare (che pure sarebbe vicino) e quindi la mia vita si
srotola tra le notti in citta' ad uscire con gli amici e il giorno,
durante il quale me ne sto all'ombra delle piante a godermi il fresco.
e a leggere. tanto. incredibilmente tanto. a parte qualche escursione
nelle riviste motociclistiche, leggo quasi esclusivamente libri: niente
di trascendentale (come vedete qui a destra), niente Proust o Tolstoj,
ma comunque sto leggendo un sacco.
Vi lascio con una perla da "traduzione inglese fatta coi piedi",
trovata nel libro di McNab: ad un certo punto, parla di una rete
informatica usata a scopi militari ("una specie di internet", come
spiega premuroso l'autore), protetta a vari livelli da
"pareti tagliafiamme". nel
mentre leggevo, sono scivolato su questa espressione molto velocemente,
senza assimilare bene il concetto. dopo qualche secondo, la mia mente
ha realizzato e ho riso. molto. stava parlando di
firewall.

da quando
non uso piu' il mio
antani_server
a casa per tenere su il blog, spostando il tutto su orangeek.org, mi
sono trovato in difficolta' a fare il backup periodico di quanto e' sul
server in questione.
tralasciando ovviamente il caso di una sessione grafica con un client
ftp e farlo a manina ogni volta, mi sono rivolto ai vari tool via linea
di comando per automatizzare il tutto. in realta', pero', non sono mai
riuscito a farlo funzionare, fino ad oggi.
usando infatti il classico "
wget -r www.orangeek.org " veniva creato un albero delle directory assolutamente folle e in nessun modo corrispondente alla realta' ;
httrack aveva lo stesso problema.
non sono mai riuscito a cavarne un ragno dal buco e mi ero rassegnato
alla cosa, ricorrendo cosi' ad un client grafico ftp. oggi mi ci sono
rimesso ed
ho capito.
la causa di tutto e' la funzione di
rewrite che ho su orangeek.org che mi permette di avere link carini del tipo
www.example.com/archive/gg-mm-yy/antani invece di
www.example.com/entry.php?id=212 (per maggiori info,
qui):
i programmi su menzionati, infatti, leggendo nell'html cercavano link a
file di fatto inesistenti che venivano cosi' creati durante il
backup. non chiedetemi perche', ma me ne sono accorto solo oggi
analizzando il risultato dei vari esperimenti.
la soluzione trovata fino ad ora, che funziona perfettamente, e' usare
wget -r sul server ftp che ovviamente non ha nessuna funzione di
rewrite. il tool via linea di comando, quindi, scarica ora solo quanto
effettivamente presente sul server. :D
per ora il difetto principale di
questa tecnica e' che devo mettere in chiaro, in uno script, user e
passwd dell'account ftp...

Ok. ok. Non sono proprio così quotidiani...
Mi riferisco ad un qualcosa che mi assilla negli ultimi giorni e, come
i miei prodi sanno, quando mi prende una fissa tecnologica, mi ci butto
a capofitto finche' non "la risolvo".
Questo è quanto: verso settembre vorrei fare un viaggio, per
festeggiare la mia (grat...grat) laurea, negli USA. durerebbe circa
30gg e oltre ai
must-see di rito (NY, LA), gran parte del viaggio si svilupperebbe in un coast to coast in macchina.
Qual'e' il dilemma tecnologico?
vorrei tenere un blog come ha fatto il mio amico per il suo
viaggio in Giappone (attualmente è down, ma tornerà).
lo so lo so... queste sono fissazioni da maniaco...ah, no. no.

1. stretti un po' i tempi per la tesi
2. lottato con debian ed il digimatrix per far funzionare il tutto
3. altre cosucce da fare
4. sto preparando un documento per indicare un po' di info su linux e digimatrix
1. e 2. possono anche essere scambiati...
nel frattempo, in questi giorni ho fatto un bel giro in moto rischiando
di stamparmi e ieri sera ho visto una splendida gara di F1... speriamo
bene per il resto della stagione! sia per la f1 che per i miei prossimi
giri in moto. >D

come vedete, il mio blog si è spostato su orangeek.org.
antani_server andrà a breve in pensione e ho preferito tenere il mio blog su uno spazio "pubblico".
l'installazione non è stata fatta ex-novo, ma copiando semplicemente la
dir e ricostruendo tutto l'indice. ci sono ancora dei problemini: uno
penso che abbia a che vedere col mod_rewrite di apache e l'altro,
invece, con non_so_cosa. vediamo se intanto questo nuovo post
funziona... stay tuned.

Domani parto per le vacanzine pasquali che (inaspettatamente) si

detto questo, anticipo che sto pensando, dopo tanto patire, ad un hosting: per ora il candidato numero uno è
y2khosting.biz. l'offerta è per hosting linux + 50mb spazio a 35€+iva / anno. come indirizzo, pensavo di usare orangeek [dot] org.
L'ho già provato con un altro account e sembra non dare problemi a pivot ed essere molto veloce. ho un po' paura in realtà.
il fatto di non avere controllo sulla macchina
mi preoccupa.
abbandonare ssh (ed usare, brrr, ftp) per gestire il server
mi preoccupa.
sperare di non dover mai usare un'applicazione che non sia installabile con solo accesso via ftp,
mi preoccupa.
comunque se qualcuno di voi in ascolto mi può consigliare servizi di
hosting alternativi o (dio quanto lo vorrei) un housing economico, sono
tutto orecchie!

qualche giorno che girello per google per trovare dei blog carini.
ne ho trovati alcuni che vi segnalo: magari tra un po' li metto nel
menu qui a sinistra, dopo aver sentito i diretti interessati.
Sono molto interessanti: l'unico "difetto" è che usano tutti
wordpress
: speravo in un po' più di fantasia...:) scherzi a parte, questo non fa
altro che confermare quello che pensavo io; wp è un ottimo software di
blogging. non c'e' che dire. D'altronde, è anche vero quello che diceva
ovvero che è

non è la
prima volta che parlo di
pivot-blacklist,
il plugin per uccidere lo spam. questa volta però è una critica...
vagavo per il forum di e mi sono accorto di
un post.
allora, spiego la questione per quanto ne ho capito. blacklist
utilizza, oltre ad altri moduli particolari, un sistema di "regole", in
parte definite dall'utente (le più utili a quanto ho capito) ed in
parte aggiornate tramite un database centrale; seguendo questi criteri,
blocca gli spammer che soddisfano una delle regole definite. Questo
sistema ha il
notevole problema di necessitare un controllo
costante dei referers del proprio sito, o dei commenti, o dei log del
web server, in base al quale definire le regole di blacklist. POI
arrivò la versione 0.8.8 di blacklist e fu implementata la funzione
.htaccess. Con questo file vengono definite delle regole per il
webserver; blacklist ora contiene una funzione che, leggendo i log,
genera delle regole per htaccess che, ad esempio, bloccano determinati
referers o indirizzi IP. Il problema rimane, però, il medesimo:
controlla i nuovi spammers, te ne prendi url o IP, aggiorni le regole.
ogni giorno. Se io devo fare un'operazione del genere
ogni giorno, non oso immaginare chi ha un sito più grosso.
La cosa bella è che oggi ho trovato
questo
post sul forum: in pratica, viene spiegato che la definizione di
parecchie regole in .htaccess, rallenta notevolmente il server
sovraccaricandolo oltre misura. Buh. il creatore di blacklist ammette
anche che non si è mai preoccupato di questo tipo di questioni; per ora
il focus principale è sull'efficienza nel blocco degli spammers, non
nelle prestazioni.
Per ora comunque ho risolto con delle regole di firewalling con iptables (grazie ! :) :
iptables -A INPUT -j DROP -s 61.220.150.2
e così via con tutti gli ip che riuscite a scovare nei log di apache.

piccole modifiche al blog: oltre al menù qui a sinistra già visto, ho
aggiunto il trackback (che sembra funzionare), ho allargato leggermente
il layer centrale in cui sono visualizzate le entry (circa 40px in più)
e sto usando una nuova estensione,"dict". quest'ultima "è stata
sviluppata ad hoc" su mia richiesta, dopo un post sul forum di
. Un grande grazie a
ethernalprophet
che ha risposto a tempo di record. L'estensione in questione serve a
mantenere una sorta di "dizionario" per i link più frequenti;
utilizzando una semplice sintassi è possibile inserire velocemente
link. ottimo lavoro!

Con questa affermazione, terribilmente falsa nel mio caso, volevo
mostrare al mondo le mie esperienze col css. Qui a sinistra, vedete un
dropside menu; ispirazione presa da dasnake e sviluppata "a partire" da
alistapart.com. Per inserirlo
nel template di pivot, per gestirlo in maniera autonoma (html e css) e
per non sporcare eccessivamente i vari file, ho utilizzato la funzione
di pivot
include.

questo è il motto di
pivot-blacklist,
l'estensione di pivot per provare a combattere definitivamente lo spam,
nei commenti e nei referers. In questi ultimi giorni era diventato
talmente pesante (temo che sia il prezzo da pagare per google :) che il
mio sito era irraggiungibile, anche in locale! :(
ho aggiornato l'estensione all'ultima versione, 1.88: prometteva
faville con il generatore di regole .htaccess per risolvere il problema
dei referers-spam. per ora sembra funzionare (anche
prima lo sembrava però): vi terrò aggiornati.

sono passati molti mesi dall'apertura di
geek_radio,
progetto che mi è sempre piaciuto un sacco. in realtà, ho sempre avuto
un po' di paura a fare dello streaming. e non a torto. ho deciso di
chiudere la radio, anche perchè leggendo i log di gnump3d mi sono
accorto che un qualche stronzo si stava scaricando
tutto, in ordine alfabetico.
L'ho fermato quando era arrivato a "beatles" e la cosa mi ha fatto
imbestialire, sinceramente. decisione rapida: via gnump3d da
/etc/init.d e chiuso.
Un pallino che ho in mente però è quello di cominciare a raccogliere
musica licenziata sotto creative_commons, ascoltarla, selezionarla e
mettere su una radio con solo musica CC. vediamo. La To_Do_List si
espande (c'è anche la tesi di laurea là dentro :)...
intanto sono partito da

In questi giorni di piu' o meno nullafacenza mi sono applicato sul mio blog.
Come avrete visto, ho aggiunto qui a sinistra (solo sul frontpage,
pero') un quadratino che mostra un'immagine di tex "scelta" random (mi
piace questa accoppiata di termini :).
inoltre, ho provato un programmillo (
singapore) in php per la generazione e la gestione di gallerie di immagini. puoi vedere il risultato temporaneo

qualche giorno fa ho letto non_so_dove che era stato organizzato il "De-Lurking Day".
il verbo (italianizzato) "lurkare" sta ad indicare un giusto e corretto
comportamento da assumere quando si visitano forum o newsgroup: la
ratio è quella di evitare di inserire messaggi già inseriti da altri
utenti oppure assumere un comportamento "non consono" all'ambiente
specifico. Il lurking, assolutamente dovuto nel campo dei NG e forum
tecnici, è più che altro giustificato dalla necessità di non incasinare
troppo.
Ma quando si parla di blog, il discorso secondo me non regge: il
blogger di solito ha immenso piacere se qualcuno posta qualcosa,
soprattutto se è qualcuno che non conosce! ed invece niente. niente di
niente.
Il De-Lurking Day è stata appunto una giornata dedicata a tutte quelle persone che spesso, magari
quotidianamente, seguono blog, siti e portali, ma che non lasciano
mai
traccia del loro passaggio: non lasciano mai un messaggio, non scrivono
ad un commento, non rispondono a quanto scritto da altri e così via.
Perchè?
Dalle
statistiche del mio blog risulta che ci
sono un bel po' di persone che passano di qui [i dati dovrebbero essere
attendibili: soprattutto quelli relativi alle "visite". io ho inserito
tutti gli 'ignore', 'hide' che mi venivano in mente: ip locali, ip
dell'università di firenze (che uso io), e così via. se hai qualche

Negli ultimi tempi lo spam e' diventato, sempre di piu', una rottura di palle
notevole; i vari software si sono, piu' o meno, adeguati per rimediare e per proteggersi.
Pivot e' stato recentemente colpito duro dagli spammers che infastidivano, sia nei commenti che nei referers.
Le soluzioni sostanzialmete sono tre;
A) resistere e cancellare a mano
a mano ogni commento, bloccare indirizzi IP e rimuovere referers...
folle.
B) usare plugin ad hoc antispam per il proprio software
C) usare un software non mainstream che non usa nessuno, certo che gli spambot non se ne cureranno.
Per non smentirmi mai io ho scelto
prima la A. Poi la B.
dasnake usa la C.

sono abbastanza sclerato per scrivere titoli del genere...
mi voglio mettere a lavorare un po' sull'aspetto grafico del blog e faro' danni per qualche tempo.

mmmh. e' qualche giorno che sto esplorando le possibilità di un nuovo motore blog o di cms che svolgano la funzione.
per ora, quelli che ho provato sono: pivot (l'attuale), tdiary (quello di
dasnake), drupal, tikiwiki, textpattern, wordpress, b2evolution.
In realta', non so neanche io
perche' dato che pivot mi soddisfa praticamente sotto tutti gli aspetti, se non un
problemino che mi ha dato ieri. Pero' ero curioso... Per ora quello che mi piace di piu' (anche se dasnake non e'
daccordo :) e'
wordpress:
veloce, leggero (anche per antani_server), altamente modulare con un
miliardo di plugin fighi. Come pero' ha fatto giustamente notare
dasnake, e' assolutamente fondamentale cambiare istantaneamente il css
di default perche' e' troppo gayo.
Nella ricerca sono stato anche influenzato da
questa 'analisi' che consiglio per chiunque, geek o non geek, abbia voglia di mettere su un blog.

antani server purtroppo e' stato spento per questi 3gg delle mie mini
vacanze natalizie, passate nella (sempre bellissima e caotica) Capitale.
Ci dispiace per l'inconveniente ma dobbiamo (parlo al plurale) ancora risolver delle incomprensioni familiari a riguardo...:(
cmq, nel frattempo vi auguro un buon natale (in ritardo) e (in anticipo) un buon 2005.
ricordate anche che, nel dubbio... gas in fondo!

ho messo un po' le mani sui template di pivot... purtroppo le mie
conoscenze di html/css non mi permettono di personalizzare troppo. cmq,
come vedi, ho creato un box a sinistra (questa volta ad hoc e non
inserito in 'linkdump') per i contenuti statici del vecchio sito.
dovro' cmq trovare un modo per fare in modo che le pagine siano
caricate nella colonna centrale del sito e non che lo sostituiscano.
vedo se il pano mi aiuta, altrimenti penso di fare delle entries e
puntare i contenuti sui permanent link. potrebbe essere non troppo
lungo, ma vorrebbe dire una entry per ogni file. mmmh. non so.

la notizia piu' importante di oggi e' che ho deciso di creare un utente
'blogger' e dare la password a tutti, pubblicandola sulla home.
nonostante la diffidenza di alcuni miei amici, ritengo di poter tentare
un esperimento del genere.
La prima diretta conseguenza e' che chiunque si potra' loggare con
questo user e postare un messaggio sul blog. allo stesso modo, chiunque
si logghi con questo user puo' modificare/cancellare tutti i post
dell'utente stesso e, quindi, potenzialmente, cancellare tutto cio' che
e' stato postato, messaggi di orangeek e GeekMaster esclusi. Ho deciso
di fidarmi e provare.
antani_server provvedera' a fare ogni ora un backup della dir di pivot,
in modo tale da perdere, al massimo, l'ultima ora di blog. Ritengo, e
spero, di non andare incontro a troppi problemi di vandalismo
informatico.

come vedi qui a sinistra, ho inserito nella categoria 'linkdump' i
collegamenti ai vecchi contenuti del sito. ancora non ho inserito il
link al
guestbook.
cliccando su uno di quei link, hai la possibilita' di vedere le vecchie
pagine. ovviamente, non sono granche' integrate col sito attuale pivot
powered. provvedero'... ma dato che ho visto nei log di apache che c'e'
gente che continua a leggere la vecchia roba, ho deciso per questa
soluzione temporanea. vediamo...
