Symbian as open source software
In the last days we saw a smart move from Nokia: it bought the remaining shares of Symbian and decided to release the OS as open source software.
Here the talk by O'Reilly Radar.
Although Symbian is not so brand new as Google's Android, the move from Nokia seems like a direct attack to iPhone's platform and the upcoming Android.
As O'Reilly Radar points out, the license choosen by Nokia is not the standard Linux GNU Public License, but the Eclipse Public License; the main difference is that, thanks the EPL, Nokia will be free to include proprietary extensions (so without shipping the source code, as required by the GPL) in its Symbian release.

Ricordate la storia di Sergio Sarnari e la Mosaico - Sistemi di Arredamento srl ?
Ho appreso qualche giorno fa, dal blog di Camisani Calzolari che scrisse una lettera alla Mosaico, che l'azienda ha risposto, sempre per "penna" di Andrea Rossetti, Amministratore della Mosaico.
Anticipo un estratto di quanto scrive Rossetti che mi ha colpito:
mi limito a precisare, nel merito, che la strada della giustizia non è stata la prima e l’unica percorsa dal sottoscritto, e non ritengo di aggiungere altro, in questa sede, in merito ai pregressi contatti intrattenuti con il titolare del Blog interessato nella vicenda.
Se riponiamo in Rossetti la stessa fiducia che abbiamo riposto in Sergio (nel credere a quanto ha scritto nel post e nel dare per scontato che non omettesse particolari), la parte in grassetto dovrebbe farci "fermare un attimo".
Quali sarebbero le "altre strade" (oltre a quella della giustizia) percorse dalla Mosaico?
Non è che Sergio sta omettendo qualcosa?
Ritengo che nel bene dell' "onesta' intellettuale" della discussione sarebbe cosa buona e giusta che una delle due parti (Sergio o Rossetti, meglio il primo che "sembra" aver omesso qualcosa, stando alle parole dell'amministratore dell'azienda) rivelasse questi particolari.

The whole wedding-thing ran perfectly ( "da dieci" :), as we said in those days): great ceremony (I was one of the best men, along Alessandro), veeeery good reception (a lot of food, a lot of wine... we all love Southern-Italy-weddings :) ) and an amaaaaaazing after dinner party!
I just wait for the pictures (that I couldn't take), from the official photographer (Giordano - if I remember well - who also worked for National Geographic) and from our friends.
Just a note: the night before the wedding (sunday), your hero performed a great alcool-show in the old town in Matera (and in the hotel too)! I was completely drunk (thanks to my brother's friends): the best way to pay tribute to the wedding !
Bill Gates Chews Out Microsoft Over XP
Via Gizmodo I found this interesting (leaked) email from Bill Gates to some Windows developers, sent in 2003.
He (Bill, founder of Microsoft, developer of Windows XP) just wanted to install Movie Maker on his Windows XP machine.
The memo is quite long (read after the jump) but I think it shows the commitment of Gates and his frustration, trying to work out his own product. Even if polite, he wrote as one who wouldn't tolerate any objections.
Please take note of the sentence
[after a crazy and system-mandatory Windows Update] [...] Someone decided to trash the one part of Windows that was usable? The file system is no longer usable. The registry is not usable. This program listing was one sane place but now it is all crapped up.

Last Tuesday, Lori Mehmen looked out her front door in Orchard, Iowa and this is what she saw. She had a digital camera handy, and somehow managed to take this photo before crapping her pants and taking cover. This, my friends, is why always having a camera nearby is helpful. Oh, and no one was injured during this tornado, fortunately.

Grande idea quella di oggi!
Dato che il buon dio ha deciso di far piovere per tutta l'estate durante il fine settimana, oggi, mentre ero in ufficio, ho pensato: "fa un caldo bestia, il sole sparisce verso le nove di sera... ma un po' di foho oggi pomeriggio???"
Appena uscito dall'ufficio, quindi, sono corso a casa, mi sono cambiato e ho indossato l'abbigliamento da motociclista-teppista e ... via!
Faentina, Bolognese, Monte Morello, Fiesole e ritorno: circa 80 km di curve! (il giro completo)
Se anche a voi viene un'idea simile, fate attenzione! Ho notato che per strada, durante i feriali e a fine pomeriggio, i pazzi in macchina sono molti di piu' ! Non parlo dei soliti imbecilli distratti (di quelli ne incontro abbastanza il sabato e la domenica), ma parlo della gente imbufalita che non vede l'ora di tornare a casa e taglia le curve come in un GP!

Come non trattare un cliente: Mosaico Sistemi di Arredamento srl e la (brutta) storia di Sergio
La storia di Sergio (raccontata nel suo post "Il Mosaico Arredamenti... Che fregatura!") mostra in maniera piuttosto limpida che le aziende nel nostro paese ancora devono capire come confrontarsi con il nuovo scenario della comunicazione.
Sergio Sarnari racconta nel suo post "Il Mosaico Arredamenti... Che fregatura!" la sua disavventura con un'azienda di mobili (Mosaico - Sistemi di Arredamento srl): il racconto è piuttosto chiaro e cristallino, senza offese nè esagerazioni di sorta. L'azienda doveva consegnare i mobili scelti in 45gg: dopo un anno Sergio è stato costretto, per proteggere la propria sanità mentale, a concludere il tutto, insoddisfatto.
L'amministratore dell'azienda in questione (Mosaico - Sistemi di Arredamento srl), tramite commento sul blog di Sergio (dove aveva raccontato la sua storia nel post "Il Mosaico Arredamenti... Che fregatura!"), gli comunica la seguente:
Scrivo la presente in qualità di amministratore della Mosaico - Sistemi di Arredamento srlMi preme preavvertire che ritenendo il presente blog di carattere indiscutibilmente diffamatorio, ho presentato in data 14.05.2008 - per conto della società che rappresento - sia una querela alla Procura della Repubblica di Ancona nei confronti del sig. Sarnari, creatore dello stesso blog, sia un ricorso d’urgenza finalizzato alla richiesta di risarcimento danni nei confronti dello stesso Sig. Sarnari per un importo non inferiore a 400.000,00 euro, con fissazione della prima udienza per il 18.06 p.v.Il procedimento civile per il risarcimento dei danni nei confronti del Sig. Che fregatura!") è già alla prima pagina di risultati, ben visibile. Poco sopra qualcuno su myspace che chiede se c'è da fidarsi della Mosaico - Sistemi di Arredamento srl.

EEE competitors are here
Just a few days ago I wrote about the new EEE Pc competitors; we have now some more details.
- I think the most important fact, in order to correctly judge the newcomers, is the benchmark of the new Intel Atom CPU performed by PC Pro UK: according to this review (found via JKonTheRun) the new CPU isn't in any case powerful. You can compare that with a Celeron (the CPU equips the actual EEE Pc). But, from the review they experienced the perhaps killer feature of the Atom: the low power consumption. It drains a lot less than the other comparables CPUs.
- Gizmodo tells us the new EEE Pc 901 is even more hackable than the old one:the guys at Liliputing found room (with a free ZIF connector) for 1,8 inch drive, a slot for a SIM card and an empty PCI-e slot.
- According to this italian news (no link for english pages, sorry), the new Acer Aspire One will be on the european shelfs on 10th July: the 299€ subnotebook will show a 1,6Ghz Atom CPU, 512Mb RAM, 8,9 inches 1024x600 display, 1,3mp webcam, 8GB SSD for Linux (80GB HD for Windows, a bit more expensive than with Tux). It weighs less than 1 Kg and with life battery of 3 hours/7 hours with extended battery in its Linux version (2,5 and 5 for Windows)
